  2019 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE THIRD TEAM (COACHES): Inside Linebacker Matt Shotwell, Junior, Cal Poly,...Shotwell (6-0, 225, Goleta, Calif./Bishop Diego High School) led Cal Poly in total tackles with 89, including a team-leading 7.5 tackles for lost yardage.   Jalen Hamler had a pair of touchdown runs, Jake Jeffrey added another and Cal Poly held off Southern Utah 24-21 on Saturday night in a Big Sky Conference opener. Kekoa Sasaoka missed a 23-yard field goal attempt for Southern Utah (1-4, 0-1) with 2:10 remaining. Hamler had scoring runs from 6 and 13 yards in the second quarter and finished with 65 yards rushing on 20 carries. Jeffrey's 4-yard TD run stretched the Mustangs' lead to 24-13 with 12:47 to play.

The Thunderbirds answered less than a minute later when Chris Helbig threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to John Mitchell to pull Southern Utah to 24-21. Cal Poly had a turnover and punted on its last two possessions. Helbig then led a 10-play, 51-yard drive that stalled on Sasaoka's missed field goal.   SEPT 2 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: In his first game in a Mustang uniform, redshirt freshman Jalen Hamler of Cal Poly completed his first six passes, three for touchdowns. He was 6-for-6 for 211 yards and three scores until late in the second quarter when he threw his first incomplete pass. He had touchdown passes of 55, 60 and 23 yards. The redshirt freshman finished eight of 11 for 221 yards and three scores without an interception. He showed his speed on the ground rushed for 96 yards, including rushing touchdowns of 3 and 38 yards. Jalen accounted for five of Cal Poly's seven touchdowns in the game, as he led the Mustangs to a 52-34 victory over San Diego. Cal Poly's 52 points were the most since the 2016 season.   Three Jalen Hamler touchdown passes in the second quarter sparked an explosion of scoring as Cal Poly defeated San Diego 52-34 in a season opener Saturday. Hamler accounted for five of Cal Poly's seven touchdowns, passing for 221 yards and running for 96. His 55-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Koski early in the second quarter broke a 14-14 tie and ignited a run of 38 unanswered points. Hamler threw scoring passes to Quentin Harrison and Koski again before halftime. In the third quarter he ran for a 38-yard TD.

Duy Tran-Sampson scored on a 34-yard run, following an earlier 87-yard TD, and led all rushers with 172 yards on 15 carries. Cal Poly led 52-14 by late in the third. Reid Sinnett threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns - three in the final 17 minutes - as San Diego whittled down Cal Poly's lead. Sinnett was also picked off three times. Hamler completed his first five passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. San Diego has won seven of the last eight Pioneer League titles and gained the FCS playoffs the last three seasons, but is 1-5 against the Mustangs. - AP College Football
